The decision to construct Fort Amherst stemmed from the Dutch raid in 1667.  The British military opted to build a defensive fortifications known as the Great Lines during the Seven Years’ War.  Two redoubt forts were created at the northern and southern ends of the lines. Amherst Redoubt was later called Fort Amherst.

Fort Amherst was designed with the underground tunnel system. The labyrinth extending to some 750 meters into the hillside was used as passage for ammunition within the fortress. Since its construction, the fort functioned as a training camp aside from being a defensive fortification. However, the fort showed action during the World War II when it served as Air Raid Warning command post.

Fort Amherst was opened to the public in 1983 and since then, there are reports of hauntings particularly along its tunnels.

Guests and maintenance crew often describe dark shadows moving long the tunnels. Witnesses even claimed of noticing a ghostly male figure dressed in black while an apparition of a boy is seen running around and pulling women visitors’ skirts.

Staff similarly told about a phantom of a soldier in the lower gun floor. Stories circulated that the ethereal soldier manifested during a wedding ceremony held at the lower gun floor. Guests were shocked when a figure of a soldier wearing red jacket walked passed the bride and the groom.

Some visitors recounted hearing voices, crying children, a wailing woman and drumming sound. People also discovered dusty small hand prints on their clothing upon leaving the tunnels.

Famous legend mentioned that a woman visitor was left behind in the Communication Room. When the guide found her, she was talking to someone on an old phone. When she hung up, she told her guide that the phone rung so she picked it up. The woman on the other line told her that her house was bombed. The guide was stunned because the old phone was not connected to any lines.
