America was once again shaken by violence as another mass shooting took place early Sunday morning (June 12, 2016).
Here is the top 3 deadliest mass shooting in the history of U.S.
3. SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SHOOTING
On December 14, 2012, a lone gunman arrived at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut armed with a Bushmaster Model XM15-E2S rifle.
Adam Lanza, 20, was dressed almost entirely in black, shoot his way through the entrance of the school with population of 700 students. Principal Dawn Hochsprung, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and Vice Principal Natalie Hammond stepped out to the hall to see the commotion. Lanza fired at them. Hochsprung and Sherlach were the first casualties, while Hammond was injured.
Lanza entered the main office but did not see the people hiding so he returned to the hallway. He proceeded to enter a first-grade classroom killing 14 children as well as substitute teacher Lauren Rousseau and a teacher’s aide on the spot. One child was injured but later declared dead in the hospital. The teachers and the students were found in the bathroom.
Next, he went to teacher Victoria Soto’s classroom. The teacher had hidden some of her students inside the bathroom while the others hid under desks. Soto was about to lock the classroom door when Lanza moved in killing Soto and other six children. Anne Marie Murphy, a teacher’s aide used her body to cover six-year-old Dylan Hockley from the bullets that killed them both.
Lanza committed suicide inside Soto’s classroom ending the 11-minute rampage.
Police found the semiautomatic .223-caliber rifle made by Bushmaster, and two handguns next to Lanza’s body while Izhmash Saiga-12, 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun was found in his car. Further investigation revealed that prior to Sandy Hook shooting, Lanza killed his mother Nancy in their home.
Lanza killed 20 students and six adults at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, known as one of the most horrific and deadly school massacres in America’s history.
2. MASSACRE AT VIRGINIA TECH
Seung-Hui Cho, a major in English senior at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University was born in South Korea. He was granted permanent U.S residency in 1992.
On April 16, 2007, Cho slipped into West Ambler Johnston residence hall and shot a female freshman and a male resident assistant at 7:15 a.m. Before heading to Norris Hall, he stopped by at the post office. Armed with a 9-millimeter handgun, a 22-caliber handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition, he chained the main doors shut and went from room to room killing teachers and students. He gunned down 32 people and injured 17 others. He then shot himself in the head, ending a 10-minute bloody chaos.
Two days after, NBC News received a package. Cho mailed the material from the university post office. The package comprised of video, photographs and writings fuming about wealthy “brats,”
1. ORLANDO NIGHTCLUB SHOOTING
The Latin-themed party hosted by Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, was attended by more than 300 people. When the event was about to end, a lone gunman open fired inside the venue while laughing hysterically. The gunman was carrying an AR-15-type assault rifle and a handgun. Later investigation revealed a suspected device attached to his body.
The police identified the suspect as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old from Fort Pierce. Mateen exchanged fire in the entrance with a security at the nightclub. Reinforcement arrived that forced the gunman to take several people hostage in the bathroom. He told police he had explosives
The mass shooting caused at least 50 casualties and 53 injured. Mateen was shot dead by police.
FBI revealed that Mateen had ties with Islamic State group (IS). Mateen’s ex-wife, Sitora Yusufiy, described him as violent and mentally unstable. She filed divorced after repeats of physical abuse. His father His father, Seddique Mateen, said his son became very angry seeing two men kissing.
The Orlando nightclub shooting is so far the deadliest mass shooting in the America’s history.
